Want to Continue Education but Don t Know What Degree
It's one of the oldest traditions – going to college and having a degree. Most of us grew up with the idea that education is the key to success and education means spending four or more years in classrooms. Well, not today, people. Not today. I'm not saying ditch college or have a heated debate with your parents on why it's not worth it. I'm saying there are thousands, maybe even millions of people out there who are 100% sure college isn't for them. People who are trapped in this tradition. It's 2016, folks. The US already elected a new president and, wait, it's almost 2017. Maybe it's time we give the non-college lovers a chance to speak. And if you're on the unsure side, worry not. Being unsure doesn't kill. Maybe there are signs that college isn't for you. Maybe some of those signs are on this list. Maybe you need enlightenment and maybe, with the smallest percentage you can imagine, this is the enlightenment you need.
16 The idea of sitting in class makes you exhausted
There are just some people who decided classrooms aren't for them. People who realized at a very early age of third grade that being out there, creating and basking in unlimited freedom is what's for them. And we really can't blame these individuals. Sitting in a classroom and listening from one teacher to another drone on and on, that can be exhausting. It can suck out the energy in us, and how can we learn if we're exhausted. It's not the teachers, okay… or maybe it's them sometimes, but you get the point. Millions of people choose not to go to college because of the mere fact that listening to a professor and being forced to sit in classrooms kill their souls. We should just deal with that. After all, high school graduates are not doing so bad so maybe, skipping college isn't a very bad idea as most people think.
15 You feel like college is just waste of money
Isn't it? I mean, we go to college, sit in classrooms and spend four (or sometimes even more) years honing what we thought was something we can hone only in classrooms. Like wisdom or talent. And then, once we've finished college, we get our *sses out the university and we now have to face debt. Lucky you if you can afford college without asking help from institutions or the government. If that's the case then you may want to keep going with college until you become a doctor or something. But if going to college means trying so hard to get a grant or a scholarship or a relative who is so big-hearted he/she offers to sponsor your tuition, then there's a huge chance you're one of the many people who thinks getting a degree is synonymous to wasting money. But well, this is life. We got no choice but to find our way through it.
14 Even without a degree, you're already putting your name out there
And then there's the kind of people who don't really focus on effort and money. They focus on time. Why waste 4 years in a college or university when you can already do what after-college life promises you'd be able to do? If you're planning to build a business and you already have the basic needs of an entrepreneur – someone willing to learn, take risks and knows how to listen to his guts well – then maybe skipping college won't be a bad choice. Maybe college really is not for you. Apparently, the society is still in the process of trying to accept this. Many parents still dread the idea of their kids doing something they're not used to, like holding up in the garage and claiming they're building something. Or moving to a friend's couch. These are the doings of modern-day students of the society. The point is if you feel like you can already get your name out there, then go!
13 The desire to explore and be lost is so strong
Don't we all want to explore? Don't we all want to try new things? And most certainly, don't we all want to do something so big we'll be remembered for it? You probably answered yes. However, most young individuals are trapped in the idea that they can only achieve such wants if they go to college and get a degree. Sure, a college degree greatly helps in more ways than one. But that doesn't mean we need to rely on it. That doesn't mean we need to bury ourselves in debt only to get this degree thing society told us to. If you feel the urge to explore and be lost and be found, if you feel like it's the one and only right thing to do now, and you've been feeling that for years, it's probably a sign. It's probably the universe telling you to go take that leap and don't listen to what others say.
12 Thinking of a traditional school setting makes you question things
Have you ever experienced questioning why you spent so many years in school? Assuming you are in college right now, have you ever asked yourself what the hell you're doing? If so, the idea of a traditional school setting is playing with your brain, and it is probably telling you to find a different setting for yourself. Because the more we question why we spent so many years in school, the more we lose the point of going to school. There are tons of courses out there that you can take for only a few months. There are online courses that you can take at your own pace. This world is giving us more and more ways to learn outside of the traditional school setting, and maybe one of those ways is calling you. Clearly, it pays a lot to listen to our guts and the gremlins in our brain.
11 You value outside the uni experiences more
What's more important to you? Everything you have in that tiny journal + the emails your professor sends, or the lesson you learn through experience and outside the university? We all have preferences, people. And believe it or not, some people are brave enough to allow themselves to learn from experience. They don't really have problems with the education system or going to college. They just can't wait to go out there and experience the world. They can't wait to run around naked (or maybe no naked) and letting the world know they're coming. These outside the university experiences and lessons are just as important as the lessons college teach us, if not more important. So if you feel like you can learn outside more than when you're in classrooms, consider that as a sign college isn't for you. Maybe not now. Maybe you need to take a year or two off. Or maybe, there's no way you're going back to school. No big deal.
10 You know you can make it even without a degree
Who can't? Because whether we like it or not, we need to make it. We need to find means and ways to move from today to tomorrow because, well, that's how life works. I'm not saying that it's definite. That college is a waste of time and money and effort. But we do need to acknowledge the people who made it even without a college degree. And we need to give those who are confused a chance to see what it really means if they ditch college. If you're that person, then know this – life will still be the same. Maybe having a degree will make it easier, depends on the kind of field you're moving through. But generally, those who skipped college are doing fine. They are working and they have families and they're okay. They made it and if you choose to, you'll make it too. It's about choice, people. And committing to those choices.
9 You keep thinking of changing your course
How many times have you changed your course already? Are you currently thinking of changing it? Apparently, this is one of the most obvious signs college isn't for you. Given that you can't make up your mind on what you want to study, are you 100% sure you want to study in a classroom? Despite the fact that we now live in a modern era, many still think college is necessary… that education has the ability to change their fate or something. I'm not sure if that's true but we all know there are also many people who have achieved so much despite the lack of college education. Maybe these people were also once very confused about what they should focus on so they kept changing their course, or maybe they knew from early on that college isn't for them. Point is, when you're unsure of something, that's a sign you need to ask if that something is really for you or not.
8 Going to college feels like you're doing it just for your parents
This is a pretty familiar feeling for many of us. Parents love to put pressure on their kids, and we really can't blame them. They only want what's best for us and they want us to have the best education we can get. Parents even juggle two (or more) full-time jobs just to pay for their kids' tuition! It's typical for them to have big dreams for their children. The question is, do you share that same dream? Just like them, do you also think the best education can solve all your dilemmas and give you a better life? Or does it feel like you're only going to college because your parents want you to, or because you don't want to disappoint them? If it feels like college is not something you're really interested with, and you're only considering it because of your parents, then maybe it really isn't for you.
7 It's impossible for you to stay at one place
If you're a traveler by heart, chances are it's the only thing you want to do. The only important thing for you is to travel and experience how vast this world is, and get to know the many different cultures… you know, the usual desires of a traveler. And it's funny because even if the one and only important thing for you is to travel, you're not worried about your future – the usual issues like how to get paid, or how you can afford the basic things you need. Because deep inside, you know you don't have to worry about those things. You know you don't need a college education or a typical 9-5 job. Here's the thing, just because you're not sure how you're going to deal with things doesn't mean you cannot deal with things. You can and you will because you need to, or else you'll end up homeless and not traveling anymore.
6 Your number one goal is to live a stress-free life
Have you ever experienced the moments in life where all you can think of is living stress-free? When you wish retirement would be kind to you so you can enjoy all the fruits of your labor. Well, guess what, you don't have to wait for retirement. You can enjoy right here, right now and you don't need a genie to help you with that. You just have to face the fact that maybe college isn't for you because clearly, college is not stress-free. Well technically, there's no such thing as stress-free life, but you can lessen the stress by focusing on things you want to do; things you're passionate about. Use these passions to build a future no one thought you could dare build, and you won't be as stressed as doing things you don't really enjoy. And the best part, you can start doing that right now. There's no specific educational background whatsoever, there's only a necessary amount of passion and drive. And that's A LOT of passion and drive.
5 You feel out of place
I'm not saying everyone who feels out of place should skip college. But for most people, they see this as a sign college isn't for them. And perhaps it works the same way for you too. Maybe you feel out of place in a college classroom because your heart and soul are both out there playing tag. Maybe you're just forcing yourself to be in a classroom because your parents paid the tuition or because your friends said going to college is the best thing. But what does your heart say? What does your gut say? School is always going to be there. If you feel like trying to get a degree at age 30 then go. if you feel like exploring and trying to see if you can build something of use right now, with no college education, then go. Maybe that is your place – holed up in your apartment and pouring your heart into a project.
4 You're going only because of society's rules
Oh boy, here we go with society. Please don't. And I mean, please don't do something just because society told you so, or because it's trending, or just because everybody else in your girl gang is doing it. Not a bright idea, my friend. It may not affect you now but it will affect you soon, and it's going to be negative. See, we love following trends. We love doing something because the people around us do the same thing. But the question is, do we also really like to do it? Are we really having fun with this social trend? I'm guessing, when it comes to college education, it's a no. I mean, who sees debt as fun? Who sees years of expensive tuition fee as fun? So, my friend, this is your reminder that you can do whatever the heck you want to do. You can take one short course after the other, or you can go to college and get a degree. Anything. Even when society thinks it's weird.
3 For you, work experience is more important than education
See, back in the old days, and I mean the generation that came before, educational background is the most important thing in one's resume. Students do everything they can to graduate with flying colors. They take part in all clubs and school activities they can and they work hard to intern at big companies. All these just so their resume would look great! And today, many companies still apply this. Many still turn down applicants even though qualified through work experience just because he/she didn't go to college. Worry not, there are also many companies that are run by people like you – people who believe work experience and attitude are far more important than a college education. Sure, it looks good if you can say on your resume that you have a degree relevant to the job. But keep in mind that there are many short courses you can take. Those would work just fine too!
2 You already have a long list of "adult" plans
What are adult plans, you ask? Well, basically the plans that involve hints of adulting, like paying bills and groceries and maybe mortgage, and also involves plans for yourself, like how you can live the life you want. If you're filled with these plans, if you know how to fuse hobby and passion with adult responsibilities, consider that as a sign college isn't for you. There's no need to get further education to do the things you love. There's no need to stay in a classroom for four or more years just so you can say you've accomplished something. Education is good. Learning something new is good. But those can happen even outside the classroom. And if you have no problem understanding that idea, then you can definitely make it through this world doing the things you love. The list of adult plans is the key here, you know. Because we need to be responsible.
1 You just don't feel it
This sounds like a very immature thing to say. In fact, when people have this thought flying in their minds they probably shut it immediately, thinking they're insane or something. But don't worry, you're not insane and you're not immature for thinking this way. Some people just don't want to go to college, period. No further reasons. No further explanations. Because life works that way. You can't explain everything. Even science doesn't have an explanation for everything! If you can't stop thinking about this… if you can't pacify the feeling of ditching college just because you want to, it's probably the one thing you have to do – ditch college. See, the thing about skipping college that most people don't get is that, it doesn't mean you never want to go. Maybe you want to but not now. Maybe you're unsure. Or maybe, it just isn't for you, period. We're not all the same here.
